Journal 8: Modern Macbeths

Hitler, the ruler of Nazi Germany in the 1930's and 1940's, is acknowledged as a modern-day Macbeth. Starting with the similarities, both Macbeth and Hitler abused their power by killing people to stay in charge. Hitler killed millions of Jewish people to instill fear into people's heads so nobody would overthrow him. Macbeth similarly killed King Duncan to obtain the crown. Also, Macbeth ordered other people to kill Banquo, who posed as a threat to his crown. Another similarity is that they were both heroes who later committed treason. They both committed murderous deeds and were later punished for them. Although they are similar in some ways, there are also many differences between them. For example, as said before, Macbeth and Hitler were seen as heroes before they rose to power. Hitler had served in World War I and pulled Germany out of an economical depression. He created one of the most powerful nations in the 1930's. Macbeth was a hero because of his heroic actions during battle. He was admired by the king bringing attention to his name. Since nobody knew that he killed King Duncan, Macbeth was still seen as a hero. Out of hatred and anger, Hitler killed millions of Jews. Besides hatred and anger, Hitler killed many people to keep his power through fear. Macbeth killed Duncan out of greed for power. He made a poor decision which caused a great deal of suffering from his conscience. Finally, Macbeth instantly regretted his decision to kill Duncan while Hitler had no remorse or guilt towards his actions. This separates a deed done out of spite and hate and something done because of a poor decision.
